social nets are killing e-mail
there is a nice post about social nets 'killing' e-mail.
(via bokardo).
yes, they do. nice feature for all the social net's out there:
include pop3 functionality in your socual net. that is, if I go to my myspace account I can also recive any pop3 e-mails there, like my university account, my company account or my pop3 enabled freemail account. that would be a cool feature. Dennis, hope you are reading this... if not, I might send you an e-mail or some gruschel-note at studivz...

Well the problem is for most social networks the only measure of success is the number of page impressions (due to their revenue model). These are often triggered by emails to people saying "you have a new message, log in and get it".
While offering POP3 (or even IMAP) access would work for openBC (people pay for access), I'm not sure it makes sense right now for free social networks. On the other hand, it would be a cool feature for the first site to offer it.
